 Why Study English

English students go on to find careers in teaching, in editing and publishing, in government, law, journalism, library and information management, and many other fields.  Past pupils of Slemish College have gone on to study English in many universities choosing many different career paths after studying A Level English.  Links can be found below for some of the more popular pathways for an English student:

Key Stage 3

English is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 3, in years 8, 9 and 10 the pupils have the opportunity to build their Core Skills within English while studying a variety of topics which include:

  • Poetry
  • Prose
  • Drama
  • Non-Fiction and Media

In Key Stage three the pupils have the chance to study authors and playwrights such as: Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Roald Dahl, John Boyne, Louis Sachar and George Bernard Shaw.

While English is compulsory for all pupils at GCSE, there are different options available.  The pupils study the AQA GCSE course and choose one of the following options:

 The English department runs a variety of extra curricular activities and competitions throughtout the year, from National Poetry Day and World Book day, to inter house competitions.  The department also runs on-going extra curricular activities through:
