 Our Aims:

  • Geography at Slemish is all about asking questions, experiencing the world around us, creative learning, and preparing students for the world of work and life.
  • Geography in Slemish College aims to challenge, stretch and encourage students to become creative, independent and critical thinkers, equipping them with the skills that we believe will prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
  • Geography helps students to experience the world around them; therefore fieldwork is an essential and fun part of what we do.

Staff:

 Mr T Manson                                                                            Miss S Reid

Courses Offered:

Key Stage 3 Geography

In Years 8-10 we help students to discover more about the world around them, and to feel challenged and excited about it.  We wrestle with questions such as:

  • Could Slemish erupt?
  • Despite all the rain, why does Ireland rarely have floods?
  • Why is the world’s population growing quicker than ever?
  • Could hurricanes happen in Northern Ireland?
  • Is global warming just a myth?

GCSE Geography

We have three simple aims at GCSE level:

  • Students enjoy themselves;
  • They engage with their work;
  • They achieve excellent grades.

Our students study the CCEA GCSE course which is broken into the following units:

  • Unit 1: Understanding our natural world (Physical Geography);
  • Unit 2: Living in our world (Human Geography), and
  • Unit 3: Fieldwork report.

A-Level Geography

At A-Level we aim to take all students away for a residential so that they can experience the world around them.  In class we engage with local and global issues and encourage students to think beyond themselves.

A-Level Travel & Tourism

In this qualification students develop knowledge and understanding of one of the world’s fastest growing industries whilst developing skills, such as independent research, report writing, analytical and evaluative skills, which prepare students for University and beyond.

Careers:

Geography combines the analytical skills of the sciences with the creativity of the arts, making it extremely desirable for employers.  Its emphasis on understanding society and the environment is also becoming increasingly important in our globalised world.  The skills developed through studying Geography are far reaching and considered beneficial for jobs, varying from:

  • law to development work;
  • engineering to investment banking;
  • news reporting to town planning;
  • policy making to the Diplomatic Service.

Other Information:

The Geography Department at Slemish also offers students the opportunity to travel to far-off destinations.  In recent years we have travelled to Iceland and Italy.  In Iceland, students experienced the power and beauty of nature, observed volcanoes, swam in the hot springs and marvelled at the majestic glaciers carving their way through the landscape.  In Italy, students climbed volcanoes, explored the ruins of cities wiped out by volcanic eruptions and caves carved out by the Mediterranean Sea, as well as sampling the famous Italian pizza and ice-cream.
