Mathematics

Welcome to Mathematics @ Slemish College

The world we live in is the way it is because of Mathematics. Whether we get our techno-fun from an iPod, an iPad or an iPhone, it is ultimately the Mathematics behind the micro-technology that we have to thank for our 21st century toys. It is also the language of the natural world. Our aim in the Mathematics Department at Slemish College is to pass on to our pupils the power and beauty of Mathematics as it appears in their world. We aim to provide them with much more than just the ability to deal with numbers. Pupils learn to think critically, analytically and tangentially in their problem solving and gain the ability to apply their Mathematical skills in unfamiliar contexts. Our aim is that pupils will find Mathematics enjoyable as they surmount its challenges.

Courses Offered

Key Stage 3

In Year 8, students will build upon their knowledge of Mathematics from primary school, as well as meeting some interesting and exciting new concepts. Throughout Years 8, 9 and 10,  we aim to highlight the relevance of Mathematics to the life of the learner, and provide the key transferable skills of thinking, problem-solving and decision making. At the end of Year 10, students will make a decision about their Mathematics choices for GCSE.

GCSE

All students are required to study AQA GCSE Mathematics and then have the option of choosing additional Mathematics courses depending on their career and A Level requirements. We currently offer the following GCSE options:

  • AQA Modular GCSE Mathematics & CCEA Additional Mathematics
  • AQA Modular GCSE Mathematics & AQA GCSE Statistics
  • AQA Modular GCSE Mathematics

A Level

For those who would like to further their study of Mathematics or perhaps require it for entry to a university course, we offer Edexcel A Level Mathematics to students in Years 13 and 14. Throughout this course, students will study modules in Core Maths, Mechanics and Statistics and assessment is based on modular examinations which are sat throughout the course.

 Social Media

The Maths Department at Slemish College has had a presence on Facebook since 2010. Mr Black set up a GCSE Maths Facebook page, initially just for his class but due to its popularity was later expanded to the whole of Year 11 and 12. Miss McCormack later became involved in updating the site and it is now regularly updated by Mr Black and Miss McCormack. This page is extremely popular and is used for everything from simply reminding a class to bring protractors to their exam, to providing links to notes, past papers and revision material on LearningNI.

In December 2011, Mrs Leetch then initiated another Facebook page for the Year 14 students doing A2 Maths. This page is still in its infancy but provides extremely useful exam related tips and advice from Mrs Leetch on a regular basis.

Open Night Maths Competition

Congratulations to Samantha McCarron of Randalstown who has won the box of Celebration sweets.
Samantha estimated the exact number of sweets in the box and her angle estimate was very close to the actual angle.

Well done to all who took part, there were many close estimates!
