Slemish College

Learning together for individual Success

Science

Welcome to Science

 Aims

Science is a core subject at Slemish and is studied by all students in Years 8-12.We follow a curriculum, which integrates aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Studies at all levels. This is approached through as practical a programme as possible and takes place in a modern well equipped laboratory setting, where pupils are encouraged to investigate their own ideas, and develop experimental and analytical skills. In addition, pupils are encouraged to think independently about scientific issues, applying their new ideas and skills to the world around them and their immediate environment at home. It is hoped that pupils at Slemish College will find their experience of Science to be stimulating, useful and enjoyable.

Courses offered

Years 8-10

Key stage 3 science is designed to develop lifelong skills through science.  At the end of Y10 pupils make a choice for science at GCSE level.

Years 11-12

All students are required to study GCSE Core science and then have the option to study additional science courses depending on their career and A level requirements.

We offer the following AQA GCSE options:

  • 3 Science GCSE’s: Pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects.
  • 2 Science GCSE’s: Pupils study Core Science and Additional Science.
  • 1 Science GCSE: Pupils study Core Science only.

Years 13-14

At A level students choose subjects that will influence the courses they study at university. At A-level assessment is based on modular examinations as well as a coursework component.

We offer the following AQA A level options:

  • A Level Biology
  • A Level Chemistry
  • A Level Physics

Careers

Science is an interesting subject requiring and developing a variety of skills. It is a highly valued qualification and we would advise advise all students planning to attend university to study at least 2 GCSE’s in Science.

When choosing A level Science we would encourage students to examine the type of course they are interested in studying at university. A chosen career may require a qualification in A level Science although, even if students are undecided, more options are kept open by studying Science at A level.

We have compiled a short list of university courses that require one or more Science A levels.

  • Medical Sciences: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Science, Nursing, Physiotherapist, Radiotherapist, Nutrition
  • Biological Sciences: Biology, Microbiology, Botany, Horticulture, Zoology, Marine Biology, Agriculture, Genetics.
  • Chemical Sciences: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Forensic Science
  • Physcial Sciences: Physics, Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Geophysics,
  • Environmental Sciences: Geography, Ecology, Oceanography, Geochemistry, Environmental Science, Archaeology, Surveying.
  • Engineering: Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Enigneering, Technology, Electronics.
