The main aim of Home Economics is to help pupils lead effective lives as individuals and as members of a family and in the community in a rapidly changing social and economic environment. A range of teaching methods are used to educate pupils about the home and family, diet and health and choice and management of resources. These issues are addressed in both theoretical and practical situations, encouraging pupils to think critically, make choices, and manage change now and in preparation for adult life.

At Key Stage 4 the programmes of study seek to consolidate and extend the knowledge and skills acquired at Key Stage 3.

Child Development and Hospitality are also offered at Key Stage 4. Child Development involves pupils in the study of the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of young children from conception up to the age of five years. It will develop the knowledge and understanding of the needs of a young child, the roles and responsibilities of parenting and the environmental influences that affect family life.

Hospitality will provide pupils with a broad background to, and core knowledge of and skills required for, working in the hospitality industry. The three key areas studied are hospitality and the customer, reception and accommodation, and food and drink.
All of the GCSE courses available will provide a suitable basis for further study at a more advanced level or for those seeking employment in Health and Social Care settings or in the Food and Hospitality Industries.

At Post 16 level we currently offer GCE Health and Social Care. This course consists of six modules, Equal Opportunities and clients’ rights, communication in health and social care, health social care and early years services, factors affecting human growth and development, dietetics and child development.

This course has been designed for those pupils who want a broad background in health and social care, which will allow them to progress to further and higher education or employment. Pupils who achieve this qualification will be fully prepared to enter a variety of HND or degree courses.
